Ubuntu Artwork team finally starts delivering. Although Ubuntu have been the most popular distro for a pretty long time now, it really need to put in a lot of work on enhancing look and feel. Though a number of high quality third party themes are available like the bisigi-project, one thing where Ubuntu lacked was the absence of good quality themes by default. That is all going to change now.
Ubuntu's brown desktop is the real culprit for most of the bad name Ubuntu got for its looks. But you know what, most of the new themes are variations of brown and they are even starting to look good! Check them out for yourself.

- Now lets take a peek at new ICON THEME sets.

These themes may not be the best you could get out there, but they are definitely the way forward. And It is not sure yet if any of these themes would ever find its place in the official set of themes for Ubuntu Karmic Koala. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best to happen. I especially liked the Hanso+Breathe combination which make Ubuntu brown look so polished!
Special thanks to d0od blog for bringing this up.

Well, in my thoughts, the brown dark themes is very cool. But it looks ugly and annoying in Open office.
Hanso theme & Breathe icon is the perfect mix, I love it very much. Thank's bro.
The humanity icon set is great! It's like the normal Human icons but better and more professional.
I just want to say:
Please, stop using that ugly and sad brown tones :-(
There are lot of beautiful colors in this world. I think that using brown tones doesn't make it look more elegant... IMHO It makes it look more depressing.
I am running Ubuntu 9.04, and not sure how to install a theme (from the ____.tar.gz file).
Right Click on the desktop and select Change Desktop Background. A window will pop up with a number of tabs including Theme and Background tabs.
Select the Theme tab and drag n' drop your X.tar.gz file into it. Thats it. Now your newly installed theme will be displayed in that list.
If you need any further assistance do leave a comment. Will try my best to help you out. :-)
Great stuff!!
My 2 Cents, Please, please include other colors like Navy Blue, soothing Emerald Green, happy Sunshine Yellow and Scarlet Red themes. I have played around with the customization, however it took me many months to master this. Therefore, for new users this could be a huge benefit as some are not 'computer savvy'.
I hope these colors are included in Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 with the familiar Brown & Orange as a refreshing change. Also, please have a theme with some transparency.
On installing "Turrican Blue" I got the message that "This theme will not look as intended because the required GTK+ theme Turrican Blue is not installed"
How do I install it?
Thanks again.
The Ubuntu Art Team has authored the "High Contrast" themes. These themes are so ugly that a first time Ububtu user would probably throw himself off the balcony.
The person who supervise the Ubuntu artwork needs to ask his boss to buy him a COLOR monitor which can display a decent resolution. Nowaday, no one uses any more black and amber monitor. I am worried about the new trend of dark, hard to read, 2 colors themes. Do these Ubuntu "artists" see any day light since the last few years?
It is simple to fix all these graphic designs absurdities. Start a contest or vote operation. Give some incentives or allow the theme contributors to name their artworks after something they like.
Offer more color themes so people who don't like the default Orange could have some alternative. And I mean nice alternative. Not the the unresponsible "high Contrast" themes.
High contrast themes are not meant for everyone. They are meant for people with low vision. But as you said people need choices and not another combination of brown and black. But these developments are definitely forward looking and lets hope for the best. :-)
These themes are merely community themes that will be included in a package in Ubuntu 9.10, they are not the result of any work by the Ubuntu art team as far as I am aware and none of them are going to be default as of yet (according to an article on Softpedia) so much for Ubuntu having a designers fingerprints all over it like Mark Shuttleworth promised lol.
Themes are only skin deep and functionality is what counts. KDE is the real DE with real features and beauty, no matter what theme is used

Lol man that's an ugly setup, noone will want to copy that xD
About time! Much much better!!!!
Defaul, slightly refined Human theme with Humanity icons is best possible choice for 9.10
Those aditional themes seems to me like some experimental, ugly crap..
This does not appear to be an improvement. The artwork quality is low, and typical of the work performed by amateur artists. If Canonical wants an attractive new theme and artwork, they need to fund a proper artistic creation.
But you know what? You don't NEED professional designers to get good looking themes. There are already some great looking third-party themes out there. Even take a look at some of the other distributions. Someone above said that functionality is where it's at, and that's true. But come on! Every other major distro out there has a decent-looking theme running by default. There have been some little tiny updates here and there, but for the most part, the Ubuntu theme hasn't changed in over 3 years.
Orange looks good when the right variation is used, but brown is ugly no matter what you do with it. If you notice, the Ubuntu logo doesn't have brown at all. It is made up of orange, red, and yellow.
If you have to use orange colors instead of soothing greens and blues, at least add some red and yellow into it.....anything but brown.
