Why Adbard is not getting enough support from Free Software websites?

Posted in:Rationale

For starters, Adbard is a new advertising network for technology based websites based upon the promotion of Free, Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) friendly products and services. Adbard had the blessings of Free Software Foundation(FSF) which described Adbard as "ethical alternative to ad networks that promote proprietary software". Read the full article by FSF on Adbard.

Why should websites that promote Free Software adopt Adbard?

Not just because Adbard is an Open Source venture which had the blessings of FSF, but because Adbard is an incredibly good venture as well. Just take this website as an example. We have been putting Ads from Adbard for 3 months now. It is unobtrusive and our readers love it.

There are no popups and you won't have an IE ad near to an article on Firefox. And, as you must have already noticed,  there is only one single Ad in every page. That is a win-win situation for the reader as well as the website administrator. One doesn't have to compromise readability for petty monetary benifits anymore. Here is the List of websites that currently support Adbard.

So why is Adbard still not as popular as it should be?

The obvious reason is money. As our internal statistics show we would have made atleast 10 times more money if we had gone with google ads instead of Adbard. But the point is, Adbard still is a truly promising venture. So we decided to stick with Adbard. We are going to stake it out for some more time but with the site moving towards a dedicated hosting server requirement we don't know how long we will be able to sustain off Adbard. But we are going to stick with it to at least give adbard a chance to break in to the big league.

There is simply a number of really good websites promoting free software out there. If only a fraction of them shows some long term vision and decides to sign up with Adbard, more Ads will come to Adbard and it will become sustainable for all.

But unfortunately, that is not happening. And we really hope things will change in the future. If you are an owner of a website or blog, we strongly recommend you to sign up for Adbard and promote this novel idea.
