Get Amarok 1.4 back in Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04

Tagged:

Amarok has been my preferred music player since i started using Ubuntu some 3 years ago. It was nimble and so easy to configure and use. And then came Amarok 2.0. Though i wholeheartedly admire the effort made by those behind  this all new Amarok 2, i still have a lot of  issues with Amarok 2.x series.

I have an old motorzr v3i with itunes as music manager(which according to me is the biggest mistake done by those behind that otherwise incredible mobile phone). Amarok 1.x series was the only thing in Linux that worked properly with itunes. That was all over once Amarok 2.0 was released. So i badly wanted my old amarok 1.4 back.http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/181/quick-list-of-things-to-do-after-installing-ubuntu

Luckily i found this incredibly useful PPA repo from where i could install old Amarok 1.4 in Ubuntu Jaunty. Here is how it is done.

Add GPG key

  • Goto Terminal and copy-paste the following.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys AE74AE63
  • Done.

Add PPA Repo

  • Open /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
  • And copy paste the followng repo into sources.list file.
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/bogdanb/amarok14/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/bogdanb/amarok14/ubuntu jaunty main

Install Amarok 1.4 in Ubuntu Jaunty

  • Before installing Amarok 1.4, do remove old amarok to undo any conflicts.
sudo apt-get remove amarok
  • Now install Amarok 1.4 in your Ubuntu Jaunty
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install amarok14
  • Done!

Are you happy now ;-)

Great stuff, after wrestling with v2.2 for a couple of days this is a refreshing change. It works and it works well. Thank you. :)

Anybody knows how to install Amarok 1.4 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala? Please post the answer if you know how, by the way, is it possible?
Won't you please please help me?

PS: excuse my english... I'm left handed.

Yes it seems to work here in my 1 day old Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 :)

I installed it using the instructions given above for jaunty. It seems to work fine -- I guess there aren't any dependency issues using the jaunty Amarok 1.4 binaries with karmic.

I tried using Bogdan Butnaru's PPA, but there seems to be an error with the 64-bit version in Karmic Koala 9.10.

Same here. After the last step (apt-get install amarok14), received the following at the end of the output:

Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/amarok14_2%3a1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa4_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

This is Karmic 64 bit, uname-a output is:
2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This article is a great find. Even though I always had a few complaints about amarok 1.4, it is by far the best mp3 player I've used on linux. But I've noticed after installing this that it seems this is the version where the album art search was broken. Anyone know if there's an easy way to fix it?

Thanks

You forgot the step of sudo apt-get update... which I forgot and then was disappointed when amarok was not found... then I realised.....

Oops! My bad, thanks for commenting, i have made appropriate changes with the post. :-)

Sorry had to post under this blog entry, but the earcandy entry is no longer accessible.

Sorry about that and thank you for the comment. There is some issue with our hosting server. And we are happy to let you know that the issue has been solved. Here is the link to the original article on Earcandy

Don't install software from unknown sources,
chances are they inserted some malicious code,
and don't ever put them in your sources.list!
That way they can update themselves!

If you really want amarok 1.4,
just compile it from source like I did.

You can find the source-code on the amarok.kde.org

The chances of someone creating a ppa on ubuntu.com for malicious code is very slim.

But then chances do exist, as always.
None the less, if something have happened and some kind of malware have been detected there, the whole community would have been informated about it, and the launchpad repository have been shut down, but that have not happened.

Personally I never liked Amarok ... but they screwed up Amarok 2 big time

Bros I think amarok 1.4 fine but after amarok 2 it is one of the suckest app in KDE .
what the hell they doing with amarok it doesn't rock any more.
