Install Firefox 3.5.1 in Ubuntu using Ubuntuzilla

Yup, you heard it right. Firefox 3.5.1 is up for grabs. Hardly a week has been passed since the release of brand new Firefox 3.5 and it already have its first update in the form of Firefox 3.5.1. Ubuntuzilla doesn't need any introduction as you have already seen how easy it is to install latest Firefox updates and releases with Ubuntuzilla.

Update: Firefox 3.5.2 is released! And you could install this latest Firefox 3.5.2 using Ubuntuzilla, or let me rephrase it , you could install Firefox 3.5.2 in Ubuntu only using Ubuntuzilla ;-)

Installing Ubuntuzilla

For 32bit Users

  • Simply Double-click on the just downloaded deb package to install Ubuntuzilla.

For 64bit Users

  • Simply Double-click on the just downloaded deb package to install Ubuntuzilla.
  • If the Double Click doesn't work, you can install Ubuntuzilla through terminal also. This is optional though.
sudo dpkg -i /path/to/ubuntuzilla*.deb
sudo apt-get install -f

Installing LATEST Firefox 3.5.*  in Ubuntu

  • Now all you need to do is NOTHING!. Simply Run ubuntuzilla.py in Terminal.  And follow the steps(simple yes/no queries).
  • While selecting language, remember en-US is the default language (if you don't know the one you want) with the code 14.

I am already an Ubuntuzilla user, what about me?

  • Simply run ubuntuzilla.py in Terminal and it will fetch you the latest firefox release.
  • Ubuntuzilla even notifies you if another update comes up, which means, when a new version of Firefox 3.5, say Firefox 3.5.*,  is released, you will be the first among ubuntu users to be able to install it. Sounds good eh ?

Remove Firefox installed using Ubuntuzilla and restore old settings

  • I think, this is the most interesting aspect of using Ubuntuzilla. It is so easy to undo all the changes and use your default Firefox using Ubuntuzilla.
  • Goto Terminal and type as follows.
ubuntuzilla.py -a remove -p firefox
  • And thats it. Your old Firefox 3.0.11 will be restored. Isn't that awesome. :-)

It worked flawlessly. As an avid Ubuntu user (since 5.04) I am always looking for easier ways to do upgrade and tweak my boxes.
BTW I just found your site today and have bookmarked it for future reference.

Thanks for your kind words friend. I will try my best to keep you updated with the latest happenings in the free software world through this blog. Keep visiting :-)

Hi
Please update your instructions. They are incorrect or out of date in the following respects:

1. you recommend the "hard way" of installing ubuntuzilla, manually installing dependencies using dpkg, which while ok, is harder than it has to be. Jjust double-clicking on the .deb will work. Further, this will fail for 64bit users, since there are some extra dependencies for 64bit architecture.

2. for downloads, it links directly to an old version of ubuntuzilla - there have been a number of fixes and improvements to ubuntuzilla since v 4.6.1 to which you link.

3. your link to the ubuntuzilla homepage is outdated, due to the recent changes on sourceforge. The new link is just http://ubuntuzilla.sourceforge.net.

Since it appears that lots of people are linking to your post from ubuntuforums, please update your instructions, to avoid confusing people.

Thanks for the update. I have made appropriate changes. Look for yourself and do inform me if it lacks something.  :-)

PS: I am not able to access 'Instructions for 64 bit users' page in Ubuntuzilla site. Could you let me know what all are the dependencies a 64 bit user should install before trying out Ubuntuzilla. Thanks

I followed your instructions and now I have the latest Firefox. Thank you very much.

Thanks for giving the instructions...

I've tried other methods to get 3.5 running on my Sony Vaio and all failed. This worked.. Excellent, thanks for the instructions.

This blog is a total waste of time. Firefox 3.5 is in the Ubuntu Repositories and has been since it was released Day ONE!

Thanks for the comment friend. Anyway the blogpost was about installing the first minor update of Firefox 3.5 series, Firefox 3.5.1. As you can see, a lot of users here have never heard about ubuntuzilla at all and they find it so useful in getting the latest updates for not only Firefox but Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Seamonkey as well.

i tried this with 3.5, but the update feature was disabled as before and the repository didn't ever update firefox to 3.5.1. so i downloaded the tar ball from mozilla and installed manually and it works fine.

As the title says I have yet to find a 64bit version.

I have updated the post above and included deb package for 64 bit users. Please give it a try. It should work.

Firefox 3.5.1 installation in Ubuntu no longer requires Ubuntuzilla. You can install it right away from ubuntu repositories.

omg if i see one more person telling people to install firefox-3.5 manually or using some tool I'm gunna snap. ITS IN UNIVERSE. sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

how can so many blog posters be asleep at the wheel.

The issue is that 3.5.x is not available in the repositories for older versions of Ubunu, including 8.04LTS.

Thanks for the comment and this post was about installing the first minor update of firefox 3.5 called firefox 3.5.1

Firefox 3.5.1 was made available in the repository just hours after the official release.
"Package firefox-3.5 - version: 3.5.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1"
"Thu, 16 Jul 2009 18:22:19 +0200"

Thank you for the update. I will notify this in the post and let users know that Firefox 3.5.1 is already there in ubuntu repository.

Worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch.

I wish Mozilla could fix that update 'problem' in Linux. Updates should be done from the browser like it is in Windows.

Again, thanks.

File "/usr/local/bin/ubuntuzilla.py", line 393, in checkDiskSpaceForBackup

i use a 4gb netbook can you help me?

It is clear from the error message that you have run out of the available free space. May be you should free up some disk space and try again.

Just out of curiosity, Ubuntu installation itself  will take up more than 3 GB of memory atleast. How can you actually install anything afterwards :-?

hi,

i got eeebuntu base, which is modified for netbook. It uses the minimum disk space for ubuntu with basic components like web browser and something else. After the Installation of ubuntu and some apps there is only about 400M free space on my netbook left, and i can't get any more. i've used jaunty on my netbook since this mod released, and i can only say it's perfect :)

but the good news is that i've resolved the problem. i just changed the requiredForBackup line to allow lower space on the disk, and it installed firefox 3.5.1 on my netbook like a charm. though i have no idea of programming, i suggest you to improve the space check of the program. normally the backup of old firefox version doesn't need so much disk space.

by the way, ubuntuzilla is the best way to upgrade firefox to 3.5 on jaunty, which i have tried with. thank you for your great job and just keep it up to make open source better.

cheers

good to hear that bro and hopefully open source will continue to rule :-)

cheers

that could be due to a firewall not allowing connections on the default gpg keyserver port. easiest way around it is to disable gpg signature checking using the "-g" commandline option on ubuntuzilla. (see ubuntuzilla homepage for details, or run "ubuntuzilla.py -h" for help.)

Had the same issue as the above and just skipped the keycheck (can check manually) and also manually downloaded the file from the ftp site and stuck it in /tmp.

ubuntuzilla.py -g -d

Hopefully will be working by the time the next firefox comes out so the update works.

Another issue encountered (Ubuntu 9.10 / amd_64) was: Cannot connect to server on first start of 3.5.1. Changing "network.dns.disableIPv6" to true resolved it as suggested here.

Probably some issue with the mirrors. Try doing the same after some time. I had tested it on two systems and it worked fine. Hope it works for you as well.
