Update: Latest IEs4Linux package (version 2.99.0.1) is released with fixes for blank screen bug. This update is included in the post below.
Installing Internet Explorer for Linux distros is still not an easy thing to do, especially for the newer versions, say, IE7 or IE8. Firefox is an open source alternative which is not only a better web browser but also a more secure one as well. Mostly you will have to install IE in your linux machine for some testing purposes or because some sites dont show up properly in browsers other than IE. If that is the reason for you to install IE in Ubuntu, IEs4Linux is the way out.
With the help of IEs4Linux you could install IE 5, IE 5.5 and IE 6 in you Ubuntu 8.10 or any other Linux distro without any complications at all. Take a look at the required steps we have compiled. IEs4Linux requires two packages, the latest version of wine and cabextract.
Installing the latest version of wine
- Goto System->Administration->Software Sources and select the Third-Party Software tab.
- Now click the ADD button and add the following repo.
For Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04):

deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt intrepid main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex"
For Ubuntu Hardy (8.04):
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt hardy main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron"

- Close it and Reload when prompted to.
- Now download the save gpg key . ( Right click and save it to Desktop )
- Open the Authentication Tab and select Click Import Key File.

- Again Close it and Reload when prompted to.
- Goto Synaptic Package Manager and install Wine. The latest version of wine will thus be installed .
Installing Cabextract
- To install cabextract in Ubuntu 8.10, simply go to terminal and type as follows.
sudo apt-get install cabextractOR
- You could also use synaptic package manager to install these packages.
System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager
Installing IEs4Linux
- Download IEs4Linux package.
- The downloaded item will be a tar.gz package and you will have to Extract the downloaded file to your desktop(preferably)
- Now go to the extracted folder and double-click on the file with the name 'ies4linux'.
- Hit 'Run' or 'Run in Terminal.'
- It will show options for installing IE 6, IE 5.5 or IE 5.

- After choosing the version of IE you want from the above menu, click OK and wait for the operation to finish.
- Hope it have helped you. Please let us know about any issues while doing this. :-)

Installed with minimal difficulty on Ubuntu 9.04. Works but when it is closed it does not end the process and causes extreme slowdown. Have to open system monitor and kill itafter each use. Anyone seen this? Know a fix?
This stops the install in its tracks:
W: GPG error: http://wine.budgetdedicated.com jaunty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 58403026387EE263
So, now what?
ui/pygtk/python-gtk.sh: line 6: 5506 Segmentation fault python "$IES4LINUX"/ui/pygtk/ies4linux-gtk.py
some cabs extracted and gui failed

I too had the difficulty in installing IE in Ubuntu.9.04 since the last 10 days until when I happened to visit this site yesterday. I happened to see the post
http://ubuntumanual.org/posts/181/quick-list-of-things-to-do-after-insta...
Go to this post and execute what is given under the "Must do stuff". After this I again tried installing IE in Ubuntu.9.04 and was successful. However, I must say that the speed is much below of what we obtain when opening a page in Firefox and also when opening the page in windows OS using IE. Any suggestions?
As i have mentioned in the post above, IE installed using wine is no way fit for regular use and it should strictly be used for tesing purposes. And i don't think you need IE for regular use when you have powerful browser like Firefox in Ubuntu. :-)
Your error prompted me to try installing IE one more time. But i was not able to find any errors and installation went smoothly. Your error, it seems, is probably related to some non functioning mirrors. May be you should give it a shot one more time. And let me know what happens. :-)
Hi, I couldn't install it. The progress was like below. I don't know what's the problem? Please help!
{
Installing IE 6
Initializing
Creating Wine Prefix
Extracting CAB files
/home/masood/.ies4linux/downloads/ie6/EN-US/ADVAUTH.CAB: WARNING; possible 6752 extra bytes at end of file.
...
...
/home/masood/.ies4linux/downloads/ie6/EN-US/VGX.CAB: No such file or directory
An error occured when trying to cabextract some files.
}
Same here.
THANK YOU!~
I have only been on Ubuntu for about 3 days! I am loving it! Simple, step by step directions for n00bs like me are invaluable to Linux. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to put everything in to terms that I could actually understand rather than just assume that I am already an expert at this. You RAWK! ~~~THANK YOU!~~~ AGAIN!
mindblowing comment ;-). Thanks anyways friend. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding ubuntu or linux in general and i will try my best to help you out. Being a newbie, may be you want to get a quick look on how to do things in ubuntu. Check this
