When it comes to keeping plants alive, a succulent can be a tricky one. If you’re not particularly experienced or knowledgeable on what exactly a succulent needs, then it might lead to death.

1. You Are Flooding Them With Water
Water and plants go both ways. Succulents and other plants need water, but giving too much might lead to death. Unlike other plants that require water on a daily basis, a succulent isn’t a plant that needs frequent watering.
It might be a house plant, but frequent watering will cause it to flood and eventually die. The reason for that is simply the fact that this plant is a type of cactus. Naturally, cactuses don’t really water but they need a well-drained soil more than other plants.
If the soil is too muddy or wet due to water, then it will lead to an unfortunate event.
2. The Container Is Too Small
When it comes to the container of the plant, there is one thing to be taken into account. Namely, certain types of plants need more room for the roots to grow. And a succulent is one such plant.
The biggest mistake people do with this plant is not giving them enough room to grow its roots. As a general rule of thumb, the container or flower pot has to be at the right depth and width. For depth, it needs to be deep at least twice its size. As for width, look for flower pots at least three times the size of the thing.
Succulents are the types of plants that need plenty of room to grow. Otherwise, you are condemning it to death.
3. Not Enough Drainage
Drainage is one of the most important things to look out for when getting a pot. Much like the width and depth, this one has to
be taken into consideration otherwise, you will be killing the succulent.
When it comes to drainage, succulents need it because the water will eventually kill it. Remember when we said that muddy soil works against this type of plant, so if the pot doesn’t have a couple of holes for drainage then it will never work.
Regardless of what kind of container or flowering pot you’re getting for your succulent, make sure to have holes for water to escape. If there aren’t any holes, make sure to make some.
4. The Plant Isn’t Warm Enough
Succulents are the sort of plants that will never survive colder climates. That’s why they don’t grow in colder countries. Much like any other cacti, succulents love warm weather. As a general rule of thumb, you’re meant to keep the plant in a room that is mostly warm.
And when spring comes around, make sure to place them near the window where they can get plenty of sunlight. Another thing to note is that the plant can react very negatively if the weather constantly changes. Thus, you’re meant to keep the plant indoors at all times.

5. If You’re Stuffing Them In A Single Pot
While succulents can live with other plants and even amongst themselves, stuffing a couple of them in a single pot isn’t a very smart thing to do. That’s precisely why it might be dying.
Stuffing multiple succulents in a single pot is a crime everyone makes. We cannot help ourselves as they look so good when full and lush.
But it is a mistake that you have to avoid making in the future. If you don’t have a pot big enough to house multiple plants, then you are certainly writing their last word. Succulents don’t really perform well in tight spaces. It’s safe to say that the plant struggles when forced to share small spaces.
We did mention this earlier but the plant has to have enough room for growth. Cramming a couple of them in a tight pot will show you exactly how much they hate it.
6. You Are Doing the Wrong Thing
Remember the part where we talked about varieties? When it comes to succulent varieties, there are hundreds of varieties out there. Succulents come in all shapes, sizes, and most importantly, colors.
There are green ones, red ones, pink ones, yellow, etc. You will likely find a plant in nearly every color.
But the more exotic the color and look, the less you know about its growing habits and needs.
It might be tempting to buy one that comes in multiple colors, but do you even know what the plant needs?
If you’re a complete rookie, then we suggest you stick to the green ones. These are the easiest to grow and we generally know everything about them.
Certain varieties of the plant can live only outdoors in dry heat. If you happened to buy one of these and place them by the window, then you are certainly ending their life without even knowing about it.
7. The Soil Isn’t Rich Enough
And lastly, the reason why your succulent might be dying is that the soil isn’t rich enough in nutrients. A nutrient-rich soil is something that every plant needs. And that’s exactly what you need to provide to your succulent.
To make the soil rich with nutrients, consider adding organic matter or perhaps even a planting mix as it contains all the nutrients a plant needs. If you haven’t done this before, then you’ll quickly notice how big of a mistake you’ve been making all this time.
